Fix Up, Look Sharp!
Self care grooming
Over the years I have worked with many Dj’s, artists and industry heads that are on the island to work and play. With the IMS Summit I thought this would be a good time for a few tips.
Male grooming has become big business since I won Men’s British Hairdresser in 2003. Grooming brands have grown massively in the beauty sector. The first men’s make up range, called War Paint for men, is now booming.
Are you looking to step up your grooming game? Whether you're a musician, producer, or any other type of music industry professional, self care shouldn’t be slept on.
Let's start with hair.
A good haircut can make all the difference in your overall appearance. Regular visits to a quality barber or hair stylist can keep your hair working for you and need less attention on a daily basis.
Additionally, de-fuzzing facial hair and trimming your beard can help you look and feel cleaner and sharper. Let’s not forget the strays on the eye brows and ears too. Although I know some men love their wild brows!

Skincare is also an essential part of any grooming routine.
The music industry can be a fast-paced and high-pressure environment, which can take a toll on your skin. Men’s skin has larger pores than women and can produce more oil. Using a face scrub to slough off dead skin cells and unclog pores can leave your skin looking younger. Make sure to also use a light moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. And, of course, don't forget to apply a natural SPF 50 face sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
Late-night gigs and early morning recording sessions can take a toll on your eyes, leaving you with puffiness and dark circles. When I’m on a shoot this is always one of the asks from the artist to cover up their eye bags! Combat these issues with an eye cream or corrector designed to de-puff and brighten the eye area. Getting enough sleep is also crucial, so try to prioritise rest whenever possible and get out in the sun for the much needed vitamin D.

Now, let's talk about your nails.
While they may seem like a minor detail, well-groomed nails can make a big impact on your overall appearance. With summer around there corner its worth considering getting a manicure and pedicure to keep your nails looking clean and tidy or at least make sure they are cut short, scrubbed and hands well moisturised. If your feet require extra attention, you may want to visit a podiatrist to get the full foot treatment. There’s a great one in Ibiza town.
Finally, let's talk about your smile.
A bright, healthy smile can be a game-changer in your overall appearance. Brush and floss regularly. Fresh breath is also essential, so always have chewing gum or mints with you when on the go. Don’t forget the lips too. You can buff them with a cotton bud and some lip balm. Aesop have a great Departure travel kit of essential products.
Use these tips. You’ll look and feel good, in your own skin and to everyone else. Whether you're performing on stage or behind the scenes, the music biz can get arduos and on top, so taking care of yourself is always worth the effort!
