What Makes the Perfect Haircut?

There’s little point chasing the latest trend if it doesn’t truly suit you. Hair is an art form, a material you can cut, sculpt and shape into something that feels entirely your own. Over the years I’ve played with every texture and silhouette, from precision lines to wild, loose movement. On shows we built our own wigs and hairpieces; backstage, hair became sculpture. Some people have a natural flair for certain areas, colour, cutting, styling, session work and in the salon you quickly learn where your

strengths lie.

Here in Ibiza hair stylists tend to do everything - from cutting to styling, colour to up-dos. Some can braid beautifully; others shine with up-dos; a few are exceptional cutters. When I’m building a team for a job, I choose stylists based on their individual strengths and the way they were taught. Some more old school — setting, tonging, Hollywood waves — others are more Sassoon, all about clean lines and precision.

When I trained with Toni & Guy, back when there were only two London salons and Guy was still alive, we were surrounded by the greats: Molton Brown, Vidal Sassoon, Sanrizz. After work we’d all end up at The Hog in the Pound pub on South Molton Street, W1. You could tell exactly which salon someone came from just by their haircut, colour and styling. Hair was an identity, a signature.

For me, cutting has always been the heartbeat of hairdressing. I love watching how hair moves, how it grows, the patterns it forms. The density, the kinks, the curls, the waves, the thickness of each strand - every head of hair is completely unique. There could never be one “perfect” cut for everyone.

So what does make the perfect haircut?

Suitability. Effortlessness. Movement. Shape. And how beautifully it grows out. Some cuts need a week to settle; others behave beautifully until the very day of your appointment — then suddenly decide to look fabulous again.

Weather, humidity, hard water, product build-up, oils, they all affect how

hair behaves. After a long Ibiza summer, I always recommend a proper

scalp reset: a clarifying shampoo, a deep cleanse, two or three thorough

washes to lift away sunscreen, oils and sweat. It brings back bounce,

shine and lightness and definitely helps on the quest to find the perfect haircut.

How much should you spend on the perfect haircut?

Prices vary wildly - from the extremely high to the suspiciously low - and people often ask why a trim costs the same as a cut. The truth is this: you’re paying for the experience, the skill, the time, the longevity of the shape and the eye behind the

scissors. A great haircut lasts. A great haircut makes you feel incredible. And, ultimately, its value depends on what it means to you. Some prefer a night out; others

choose craftsmanship. So I’ll leave you with this: Are you worth it?
