The Truth About “Natural” Makeup: Why Technique Matters More Than Products

Natural makeup is often described as simple, as though it requires less effort, fewer products and very little planning but in reality, creating a natural finish relies far more on technique than anything else. When looking at natural makeup techniques, the first thing to understand is that preparation is everything.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail

The skin needs to be properly cleansed, hydrated and balanced before any makeup is applied. Without this, even the best products can sit unevenly or fade more quickly, particularly in warm conditions like Ibiza. A lightweight moisturiser and appropriate primer help create a base that holds makeup without feeling heavy. One of my favourite primers is Charlotte Tilbury’s Poreless primer which also has SPF 50.

Foundation is often where things go wrong. Using too much product in an attempt to create coverage usually leads to a less natural result. Instead, applying small amounts and building gradually allows the skin to remain visible while still evening out tone. Concealer can then be used only where needed, rather than across the entire face. If the skin allows it I will not use a foundation at all. There are also many other great products on the market that can be used instead of foundation and are much more lightweight.

The Right Tools Make All the Difference

Application tools also make a difference. Brushes and sponges should be used with a light hand, blending products into the skin rather than layering them on top. The goal is always to remove any visible edges, so everything feels seamless. I like to use my fingers as the warmth from my hands helps to blend product more easily.

Setting the makeup correctly is what allows it to last. In Ibiza’s climate, this means using minimal powder, focusing only on areas that tend to become shiny, such as the T-zone. Over-powdering can make the skin appear dry and reduce the natural effect. A setting spray helps hold everything in place without adding weight.

Enhancing, Not Reshaping

Blush, bronzer and highlighter should be applied subtly, enhancing the natural structure of the face rather than reshaping it entirely. Cream-based products often work well in warmer climates, as they move more naturally with the skin.

Eye makeup follows the same principle. Soft definition, well-blended tones and products that are resistant to heat and humidity help maintain the look throughout the day without needing constant touch-ups.

Finally, lips should be prepared in advance. Gentle exfoliation and hydration in the days before any event ensure that lip products sit smoothly and last longer.

Natural makeup is not about doing less, it is about doing everything with intention, so that the final result feels effortless, even though it has been carefully created.
